Vice President Kamala Harris has reportedly narrowed her selection of potential running mates to three candidates, as per a report from Bloomberg News. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that Harris is considering a variety of vice presidential candidates within the Democratic Party, but a short list has emerged featuring three prominent figures with broad national appeal: Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, and Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota.
A spokesperson for the Harris campaign, when approached by Bloomberg, confirmed that the Vice President has instructed her team to initiate the vetting process for potential running mates, while declining to elaborate further. Media reports suggest that Harris aims to finalize her decision by August 7th.
Josh Shapiro, the Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania, gained prominence through his decisive victory in the 2022 election. Previously, he served as Pennsylvania’s Attorney General from 2017 to 2021, where he was noted for his investigations into clergy sex abuse and efforts to safeguard voting rights.
Shapiro has also been active in addressing the opioid crisis and human trafficking within the state. Mark Kelly, a former NASA astronaut currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Arizona, brings a distinguished background in military and space exploration. Since his election in 2020, Kelly has focused on veterans’ affairs, science and technology, climate change, and gun control advocacy alongside his wife, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. His moderate stance and expertise in border issues add further dimensions to the considerations for Harris.
Tim Walz, the current Governor of Minnesota since 2018, previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives and has a background in education and military service. His gubernatorial tenure has been marked by a focus on state education reforms and veteran support initiatives.
Choosing a vice president will make the Democratic team stronger against Republicans Donald Trump and JD Vance in November. Harris would campaign, raise money, and support Harris by balancing her strengths and covering her weaknesses.

This decision coincides with Harris’ intense efforts to overhaul the Biden campaign structure, define her own image to voters, and bolster her fundraising efforts all within approximately 100 days until Election Day.
