The New York Times Found an old Email this Weekend, The Email revealed a conversation between JD Vance and his former Yale classmate. In one Email, Vance described Trump as “morally reprehensible. He expressed different views, according to emails with his classmate published by The New York Times.

JD Vance, before his Senate run, exchanged emails with his classmate Sofia Nelson, a Detroit-based public defender who is also transgender. In these emails, Vance expressed support for an Arkansas ban on gender-affirming care for minors. However, this stance led to a falling out between Vance and Nelson. It’s worth noting that the ban was subsequently overturned by a federal judge last year.

According to the Times report, the correspondence between Nelson and Vance spans from 2014 to 2017. In these messages, Vance criticized the GOP’s support of Trump, describing the former president as a “morally reprehensible human being.” He also expressed disappointment with law enforcement following the 2014 killing of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old Black man.

The Times noted that Vance wrote, “I hate the police. Given the number of negative experiences I’ve had in the past few years, I can’t imagine what a black guy goes through.” They also highlighted a 2015 comment from Vance where he criticized Trump in response to Nelson, who had said that a Muslim friend felt unsafe because of Trump’s rhetoric.

In 2016, he also wrote that “the more white people support Trump, the more Black people will suffer.”

Since Vance was picked as Trump’s running mate in July, his old comments about Trump have come back online. Some of these comments have been used by Kamala Harris’ campaign to criticize Trump. In a 2016 recording shared by her campaign, Vance is heard saying, “Trump is a really bad candidate and frankly I think he’s a really bad person.”

One year after, when he launched his Senate campaign in 2021, Vance’s stance on Trump notably changed. During his Senate run, Vance began to echo Trump’s unfounded claims about election fraud and, in July 2021, expressed regret for his previous criticisms of Trump in an interview with Fox News.

“Like many people, I criticized Trump back in 2016,” Vance told Fox News. “I ask people not to judge me based on those comments from 2016. I have openly acknowledged that I made those critical statements, and I regret them and being mistaken about him.”
